Part 2 of Helium-3 Infographic Series Published as Demand Expectations Continue to Rise
With the release of the final two graphics in its helium-3 infographic series, Pulsar completes its educational initiative designed to simplify the science, applications and growing strategic importance of one of the rarest and most valuable materials on Earth.
While largely unknown outside scientific and research circles, helium-3 is increasingly being viewed as a strategic resource due to its applications across quantum computing, advanced cryogenics, neutron detection, medical imaging and, potentially, future fusion energy systems.
One of the most compelling applications lies within quantum computing. Helium-3 is used in specialised dilution refrigeration systems capable of reaching temperatures below 10 millikelvin – colder than outer space – conditions required to stabilise qubits, the fundamental building blocks of many quantum computers.
As investment into quantum technologies accelerates, some industry observers have begun comparing helium-3’s importance to the future quantum economy with the role silicon played in the original computing revolution.
The challenge facing many of these emerging industries is supply.
Helium-3 remains extraordinarily scarce. Historically, the isotope has only been available in very limited quantities, primarily as a by-product of tritium decay associated with nuclear stockpiles. This scarcity has contributed to reported values of up to US$18.7 million per kilogram, while growing demand expectations have intensified discussion around future supply security.
Against this backdrop, Pulsar’s Topaz Project in Minnesota has attracted international attention following the independent confirmation of naturally occurring helium-3 within produced gas from the Jetstream #1 well. Concentrations of up to approximately 14.5 parts per billion have been reported, comparable to, and in some cases exceeding, concentrations commonly referenced in lunar helium-3 studies. The findings highlight the possibility that meaningful terrestrial helium-3 recovery could potentially emerge well ahead of extraterrestrial extraction initiatives currently being pursued by several companies seeking to unlock lunar helium-3 resources.
As nations increasingly focus on technological leadership, supply chain resilience and next-generation innovation, helium-3 is emerging as a resource of growing strategic importance.
